So what did happen to Sir Francis Poyntz?

Here’s what some of our guests said:

A captivating whodunit evening presented by Hunsdon Village Drama group, Quintessence, was staged in Hunsdon’s beautiful church, St Dunstan’s, whose historic setting added a wonderful sense of authenticity and atmosphere.

The question that needed to be asked and answered by our narrators Lorraine and Vanessa, ably supported by a variety of beautifully attired Tudor folk was this: Was the death of Sir Francis Poyntz simply due to the dreaded sweating disease or was he in fact murdered?

Drawing on Lorraine Newman’s extensive research, surely a labour of love, the production treated the audience to a fascinating, thought provoking and thoroughly entertaining evening. Our thanks to all concerned including those who provided the tasty Tudor delicacies!

It was indeed a great night, thoroughly enjoyed by all. It’s taken 498 years for the story of Sir Francis to be told, but we are pleased to have been part of the retelling. Research continues into that most intriguing period of history and to the circumstances around his tragic death. Maybe there are yet more clues to uncover which will shed further light on the matter. We are hoping that Quintessence will be happy to present a revised version of the story to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Francis’ demise. Watch this space…

Our huge thanks to Quintessence and all others involved for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. Don’t forget, if you’re interested in history, the church is developing a website devoted to the history of the church and the village it serves, and opening the building regularly for visitors (dates on our calendar, here).
